Meet the DoubleShot - Our First GMT!

I started building watches for myself about two years ago. Recently, I created one inspired by the richness and warmth of a freshly pulled espresso right when the weather starts to cool down, which are the only things that keeps me going most days and nights (until naptime). Doing business with companies 12-15 hours ahead of New Orleans requires tracking multiple time zones and working late nights. The DoubleShot GMT (GMT hand is a fourth hand that tracks a second timezone in a 24-hour format, for anyone new to watch stuff) combines all of the above, making it a unique and versatile piece I’m excited to share with you. Like every watch I make, your DoubleShot GMT will be carefully assembled by hand in my home office, where attention to detail is my top priority.

Sizing Note: Pictured is a 40mm case on a 7.25" wrist.

Shipping Note: Since these watches are built by hand, please allow for a 2-3 week build time before they ship.

The DoubleShot GMT isn’t just about coffee inspiration or late-night design sessions—it’s designed to accompany you through every moment of your day, from overnight flights to morning meetings to evening get-togethers. Whether you're tracking two time zones or timing your espresso, the DoubleShot GMT blends practicality with style.

Understanding Mechanical/Automatic Watches vs. Quartz Watches

What is a Mechanical/Automatic Watch?

Mechanical and automatic watches like this are timepieces powered by a complex series of gears and springs. Unlike quartz watches, which use a battery, mechanical watches rely on the mechanical movement of their parts to keep time.

  • Mechanical Watches: These watches must be manually wound by turning the crown. The mainspring stores energy, which is gradually released to power the watch.
  • Automatic Watches: Also known as self-winding watches, these harness the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist to wind the mainspring. If you wear them regularly, you don’t need to wind them manually.

What is a Quartz Watch?

A battery powers quartz watches and use a small piece of quartz crystal to keep time. The battery sends an electrical current through the crystal, causing it to vibrate at a precise frequency. These vibrations are converted into regular pulses, which move the watch hands.

Key Differences:

  1. Power Source:

    • Mechanical/Automatic: Powered by a mainspring and gears.
    • Quartz: Powered by a battery.
  2. Movement:

    • Mechanical/Automatic: The second hand moves smoothly, sweepingly.
    • Quartz: The second hand moves in individual ticks.
  3. Maintenance:

    • Automatic: If worn consistently, the motion of your wrist will load the spring and keep it running. May need occasional servicing.
    • Quartz: Battery needs to be replaced periodically.
  4. Accuracy:

    • Mechanical/Automatic: Slightly less accurate, with minor variations in timekeeping due to mechanical parts.
    • Quartz: Highly accurate, with minimal deviation over time.

Why Choose a Mechanical/Automatic Watch?

Mechanical and automatic watches are often chosen for their craftsmanship, heritage, and the intricate engineering involved in their creation. They offer a tangible connection to the tradition of watchmaking and are valued by enthusiasts for their beauty and the skill required to make them.
