I began building watches just under two years ago, mainly for myself. Recently, I assembled one that drew inspiration from the color scheme at our brick-and-mortar (and also resembled the pink and green fruit that gave it its name) and is unique and beautiful enough to share with all of you. Just like the one in the photos, your watch will be assembled by me in the watchbuilding section that's taken over half of my office.

Understanding Mechanical/Automatic Watches vs. Quartz Watches

What is a Mechanical/Automatic Watch?

Mechanical and automatic watches like this are timepieces powered by a complex series of gears and springs. Unlike quartz watches, which use a battery, mechanical watches rely on the mechanical movement of their parts to keep time.

• Mechanical Watches: These watches must be manually wound by turning the crown. The mainspring stores energy, which is gradually released to power the watch.
• Automatic Watches: Also known as self-winding watches, these harness the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist to wind the mainspring. If you wear them regularly, you don’t need to wind them manually.

What is a Quartz Watch?

A battery powers quartz watches and use a small piece of quartz crystal to keep time. The battery sends an electrical current through the crystal, causing it to vibrate at a precise frequency. These vibrations are converted into regular pulses, which move the watch hands.

Key Differences:

1. Power Source:

   • Mechanical/Automatic: Powered by a mainspring and gears.
   • Quartz: Powered by a battery.

2. Movement:

   • Mechanical/Automatic: The second hand moves smoothly, sweepingly.
   • Quartz: The second hand moves in individual ticks.

3. Maintenance:

   • Automatic: If worn consistently, the motion of your wrist will load the spring and keep it running. May need occasional servicing.
   • Quartz: Battery needs to be replaced periodically.

4. Accuracy:

   • Mechanical/Automatic: Slightly less accurate, with minor variations in timekeeping due to mechanical parts.
   • Quartz: Highly accurate, with minimal deviation over time.

• Damage caused by accidents, misuse, or improper handling
• Water damage if care instructions are not followed
• Unauthorized repairs or modifications
